A journey of trust
Three months can change everything.
When Jason and I first met in London, he was sceptical about coaching. Curious but guarded. Recently, sitting here in Cape Town, I watched him articulate his vision of “Jason at 60” – running on the beach, competing with his future children, living life fully. This transformation wasn’t just about coaching – it was about trust, vulnerability, and the courage to dream bigger.
The power of authentic connection
You see, the most powerful professional relationships aren’t built in boardrooms. They’re built in moments of shared vulnerability. As Jason put it, feeling “raw” but seeing improvement in that rawness.
When someone trusts you enough to share their dreams, that’s not just a conversation – it’s a privilege. And sometimes, those dreams start small. Like my daughter heading off to university with her own precious dreams, or Jason visualising his life at 60.
From scepticism to growth
The beauty of this journey has been watching the transformation:
- From questioning the process to embracing the journey
- From focusing on immediate goals to thinking in decades
- From being coached to wanting to help others
The real meaning of mentorship
Here’s what I’ve learned: True mentorship isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about:
- Creating safe spaces for vulnerability
- Challenging assumptions gently
- Celebrating growth in all its forms
- Being willing to learn from each other
