Active Listening
Active listening is a powerful tool for building trust and proving yourself as a leader.
How you respond matters when a team member shares a complaint or a suggestion.
If someone talks about a weakness they want to work on, your reaction can either shut down the team or make them feel more open and valued. Remember, team members talk amongst themselves, and your response sets the tone.
Active listening gives you a chance to show that you value their input. For example, if someone suggests a different approach to a project, take the time to explore their idea.
Ask questions, understand their perspective, and consider implementing their suggestions. It builds trust and encourages others to share their thoughts as well.
However, being this kind of leader isn’t easy. Leaders often struggle with their limitations and personalities. It requires staying neutral, not taking offence, and continuously working on self-improvement. Leadership constantly challenges you to have a growth mindset.
Think about your leadership style. Are you really listening to your team? Are you making them feel valued and heard? How are you handling their feedback?
Building this trust takes effort, but the rewards are worth it. Your team will be more engaged, motivated, and open.
