The unexpected path to creativity

Have you ever caught yourself thinking, “I’m just not the creative type”?

I recently had a fascinating conversation with Renier Lombard, the Managing Director of FDC,  that challenged everything I thought I knew about creativity. Here’s what struck me: creativity isn’t about being artistic – it’s about being curious.

As Renier shared, “Traditionally, I wouldn’t say I’m super creative, but my curiosity creates that creativity.” He’s onto something profound. By constantly asking questions and placing himself in uncomfortable, unpredictable situations, he’s discovered that creativity emerges naturally.

Think about that for a moment. What if your next breakthrough isn’t hiding in a flash of genius but in the questions you dare to ask?

The three pillars of modern creativity

From our conversation, three essential elements emerged:

  1. Curiosity as Your Compass: It’s not about having all the answers. It’s about asking better questions. When was the last time you challenged the status quo simply because you were curious?
  2. Relationships as Your Catalyst: One relationship can change your life. Renier shared how a single connection in Singapore tripled their business within a month. Creativity isn’t a solo sport—it’s a team game.
  3. Space for Innovation: As leaders, we must create an environment where curiosity thrives, where failure isn’t punished but seen as a stepping stone to innovation. As Renier puts it, “That’s how you find out what not to do—by being curious.”

Small H1: Real-world impact

During my conversation with Renier, he shared something that resonated deeply: “Education doesn’t just stop with university.” In fact, the university is just the tip of the iceberg. True creativity comes from lifelong learning, from staying curious, from constantly asking “What if?”

Question of the week

Here’s what I’d love you to ponder: “What one question, if you had the courage to ask it, could transform your business or career?”

Remember, creativity isn’t about being the smartest person in the room. It’s about being curious enough to ask the questions others don’t dare to ask.

Weekly wisdom

“If you can create a curious staff base that wants to ask questions, wants to challenge, wants to do things differently – that’s how innovation happens.” – Renier Lombard
